In the 1990s, two things fascinated me: the Internet and logistics.
The Internet was the coolest thing of that time and had just begun to make its way into China. Internet access was expensive, so I often went to the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to use their network. I had a feeling that it might be a game changer of our society and lives. A funny story was that when I started my first venture, I registered a company named Beijing Yingtainaite Technology Development Center. I thought it might be rejected but it was surprisingly approved. The reviewer probably didn't recognize that "Yingtainaite" was the Chinese pronunciation of "Internet."
On the other hand, logistics represented the traditional side of society. When we were surfing online and experiencing the wonders of the digital era, goods were still being transported using age-old methods. China's economic surge and technological advancements brought about a wave of progress, such as Mobile phones, Windows operating system, automated production lines, and pop culture icons, yet logistics remained tethered to antiquated practices. Today, we take for granted the convenience of door-to-door delivery and same-day services, but this wasn't the case back then. Let me give you a scenario. You received a box of imported wine from relatives in another city. Good chances were that you would need to go to a freight yard far away from the city, rummage through a cluttered, dusty, and sun-exposed corner to find the box of wine, and carry it home yourself. You would be lucky if it hadn't been spoiled for the long transport time.
Phenomenon like this needs to be changed. I hope to use technology to transform the logistics filled with sweat and toil into a "smart" practice. I believe that drastic chemical reaction will happen between the most cutting-edge Internet and the most traditional logistics.
Logistics is the backbone of a thriving market economy, propelling the pillars of manufacturing, consumption, and circulation. A pivotal service in the modern economy, logistics has burgeoned into a massive industry in China. The past decade saw a remarkable rise of outstanding express delivery companies in China, fueled by the rapid growth of e-commerce. China's express freight volume has surpassed that of all other countries combined, with a world-leading efficiency. However, express delivery represents only a fraction of the broad logistics world. Logistics not only take place in specialized logistics service providers but also in various other sectors such as coal, chemicals, cement, commodities, food, and automobile, permeating every aspect of the national economy. In many aspects of the broad logistics, our overall level remains dismal. Despite the high-speed annual GDP growth and China's status as a superpower, we still face challenges such as overloaded trucks, river fatigue, substandard loading and unloading, crude management methods and low efficiency.
While logistics may appear distant from ordinary people, it holds significant relevance to our individual lives. A significant portion of the costs we bear—from clothing purchases to everyday consumables, a bottle of coca cola or rent—ultimately contribute to the logistics industry. In China, logistics costs account for more than 30% of product costs, whereas in developed countries, it is typically 10 to 15%. If we could improve efficiency by just 10%, Chinese consumers could save 3% in their consumption, which amounts to a trillion yuan annually saved for better purposes. Furthermore, using technology to monitor overloading and reduce accidents, we can better safeguard drivers, goods, vehicles, and roads, saving the lives of thousands of drivers and protecting their families.
This is what brings us G7 Connect. We aspire to create better productivity tools through IoT technology, improve the transportation processes in various industries with our partners, and become the "lubricant" of socioeconomic activities.
Throughout the years of G7 Connect's development, I have encountered ambitious individuals like Sherry, Julian, and Zhang Jielong, as well as outstanding partners from various fields. Although we have different backgrounds, experiences, and even perspectives, we share a commitment to transparency, prioritizing the bigger picture, and self-improvement. This brought our team together and shaped today's G7 Connect. Our first product at G7 Connect was simply displaying truck positions and mileage on a PC, seemingly insignificant. However, today we have connected millions of trucks, forming the world's largest IoT platform. Each innovation and breakthrough we made initially seemed trivial, but these accumulative incremental changes have become visible. Everyone who first walks into our office will notice these changes on the large screen.
We are here, ready and waiting for you. Let's join forces to drive impactful change together.
